International Dot Day

Description: International Dot Day was created to celebrate creativity and individual talents. As a class, we read Peter H. Reynold's book, The Dot, and then went over how there are several different ways to create dots. We used coffee filters to experiment with different mediums and whether or not they were water soluble. I made my second dot by coloring the negative space instead of the dot itself.

Extension Activity: I would have the students work together as a whole class to create one large piece. Their individual dots would show their individual talents and patterns. The group project would show what they can make when they combine all of their talents towards one common goal.

Elements and Principles of Design

Description: When talking about the elements and principles of design, we were tasked with taking pictures that we thought embodied each element and principle appropriately. I have attached my top five photos that I thought did a splendid job of  expressing contrast, emphasis, color, space, and texture. See if you can match these pictures to the same elements and principles as me!

Extension Activity: I will choose a few pictures for my students to analyze. Students would be divided into small groups and work together with their peers to practice their abilities of spotting the different elements and principles of design. Each group will have the same pictures but will have different discussions and interpretations of the photos. Since art is subjective, we would come back together as a whole group and share what each group thought of.
